Crowsnest License & Registry

Out of Province Inspections

Most vehicles coming from outside of Alberta must have an out of province inspection done before obtaining registration. Before this inspection can be done, you are required to obtain a request for and Out of Province vehicle inspection, purchased from a registry office.

To purchase this form you would need your identification and proof of ownership. Once the inspection is completed, the certificate is only valid for 14 days. 

Some vehicles may be exempt:

1) A vehicle coming from British Columbia or Saskatchewan and:

  • The vehicle is less than four years old
  • Proof of SK/BC registration in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided
  • The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN verification

2) The vehicle has bee inspected in British Columbia or Saskatchewan within the last 90 days and:

  • Proof of SK/BC registration in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided
  • Government issued inspection certificate issued in the last 90 days is presented
  • The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN verification

3) Brand new vehicle and purchased within the last 90 days in a Canadian jurisdiction and:

  • Bill of sale must be in the name of the person requesting the exemption
  • Vehicle must be present at the Registry for VIN verification
  • An original NVIS (New Vehicle Information Statement) must be presented if the vehicle was not registered within the 90 days

4) The vehicle is brand new and purchased in the United States and:

  • The bill of sale, dated within the last 90 days. and in the name of the person requesting the exemption
  • Stamped vehicle import form and original Certificate of Origin must be provided
  • The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN verification

5) If the vehicle has a GVW over 11,794 kg the Out Of Province Vehicle Inspection is NOT required. However a Commercial Vehicle Inspection will be required in its place.

  • The Commercial inspection can be no more than 14 days old
  • The vehicle must be registered commercially
