Legal Name Change
A legal name change is to legally change the name on a birth certificate in Alberta. Some restrictions apply. The new name must comply with the following:
- Must use the English alphabet
- Cannot contain:
- non-letter characters
- Can contain the following punctuation (non-consecutively):
- period (.)
- hyphen (-)
- apostrophe (‘)
A name change application can also be denied is the name causes confusion, embarrasses a person, defrauds or misleads the public, or is offensive on any other grounds.
Correction of information, change in parents, or marriage does not require a legal name change.
A name change application can take from 6-8 months to complete.
